Submission Information

A consortium of individuals and organizations in the Boonslick area has been working since early November 2002 to develop an extensive art history project for the area. Currently funding requests have gone out and support has been positive. February through August efforts will be directed toward fundraising.

Our immediate goal is to have a statue of Hannah Cole, founder of Boonville, unveiled the first week of June 2004 as part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition reenactment.

Submissions are limited to artists who live or have a studio in Missouri or to sculptors who grew up in the Mid-Missouri area and may now reside elsewhere.

The collaboration will give highest priority to bronze, however, it will secondarily consider other media. The statue would be approximately 7.5 feet tall (if standing) or taller. Preference will not be given a standing statue, but dimensions should be such that if the representation were standing, it would be approximately 7.5 feet tall or taller.

It shall be in period (1810) costume. Clothing, outdoor and indoor headwear for the area are depicted on the web. No drawings or pictures exist of Hannah Cole. The consortium may include a requirement that the face be drawn from a living figure or other person. (Part of the fundraising may include a contest to select the "face" for the statue). Hannah Cole was approximately age 40 when Boonville was founded..

Proposals would set $50,000 for a bronze statue. Submissions should detail the artists' role, performance, pay schedule expectations, etc....  When selection is complete, the artist would have 30 days to provide a maquette for public comment.

The proposed statue will be the centerpiece of what currently is known as Morgan Street Park. This is a center point in Boonville and highly trafficked and visible. The park is 150 feet east to west and 33 feet wide. The statue would face south. The artist concept drawing should include whether the statue will be placed ground level or elevated. A statue in the park (which includes how the park currently looks) is on the web.

In addition to a concept drawing (center view preferably on white 8 by 12 paper--other views and sizes also welcome), a portfolio of past commissions and references are to be included.

Submissions must be postmarked by May 18, 2003.  For additional information and to submit, send to:

A committee will be selected to review entries and select finalists. Public input will be selected from the finalist submissions.
