Tips for Tantrums from "Parent Soup"

.) Stay calm yourself -- A worked-up parent just intensifies the tantrum. If you lose your cool, it only makes it more difficult for your child to compose himself.

.) Lower your voice -- I scream, you scream, we all scream... The louder you are, the louder your child will become. A soft tone of voice helps your toddler understand that you are in control.

.) Do NOT get physical -- A tantrum is something your child cannot control.

.) Make the environment safe -- If your child is physically out of control, move her somewhere safer for everyone and everything, protect her from dangerous surroundings.

.) Distraction -- If your child can be distracted, try turning on some music, or reading a favorite book. **Some children DO get more upset if you try to divert their attention from the tantrum, so use your judgement!

.) Don't overpower the little one -- Sit down on the floor with your child. Get down on their level. Children can be intimidated by a bigger person standing over them when they have lost control of the situation.

.) Try to Ignore -- Continue on about your business and make the effort to ignore the situation. It's not much fun getting worked up when no one pays attention!

.) Time Out -- Older children especially will benefit from a cooling off period. This gives them time to regain their composure and get back in control of themselves.
