Christ Church Episcopal

Name:
Red Door Church, Christ Church Episcopal

Location:  4th and Vine Streets

Built:  1844-1846

The Episcopal Church is located on fourth and Vine Streets.  The congregation was formed in 1835 and the lot purchased  in 1841.  Construction began in 1844 and the church was dedicated in 1846.  It is the "Second oldest Episcopal church west of the Mississippi River"  and "the Oldest Episcopal church building in continuous use west of the Mississippi."

Constructed of brick with eight large windows., its organ is near the left side front entrance. In 1854 the first of the four pipe organs was installed and --at the time--believed to be the largest west of St. Louis.

The church has 54 pews.  In 1847 , a year after the building was completed,  Hooper Bell Company installed the bell.

Additional renovations took place in 1867 and included installation of stained  glass, a center aisle and gothic tracery in the chancel.  A choir room was added to the north wall in 1885.  In 1929 a large  parish room was built to the north.  In 1970 minor restoration was undertaken and brick walls  sandblasted..
