Hain House

                                                Name: Hain House

                                     Location: 421 4th Street

                                            Built:  1836

The construction of Hain House took place 167 years ago.  The home remained in the Hain family for 145 years. It began with  George Hain, a Swiss immigrant who was a blacksmith and horticulturist.

In July 1836 he purchased the property at Fourth and Chestnut Streets.  He began with a two-room house from walnut logs with a loft. In 1843 he married Sophia Aull. They had three sons and one daughter. In 1843-1849 they added a small one-room structure on the east side of the house.  This was joined to the original house with construction of another room followed by a porch. All rooms were designed to be accessible from the porch.  The little house was completed with a picket fence in 1870.  A brick sidewalk was added in 1908.

It was sold by the last of the Hain heirs in 1981 to the Crosby Kemper Foundation of Kansas City. The  foundation donated it to the Friends of Historic Boonville. The Friends are responsible for the house's maintenance.
