Laura Speed Elliott Middle School

Name:  Laura Speed Elliott Middle School, LSE

Location:  700 Main Street

Built:  1915

Laura Speed Elliott on the corner of Main and Locust Streets was constructed in 1915 as a high school .

John Stewart Elliott was a wealthy Boonville resident who worked as a banker and railroad contractor.  Peyton R. Hayden sold the land to Elliott.  The lot was donated by Elliott as a tribute to his wife, Laura Speed Elliott, who passed away on March 15, 1912.  After her death, John Elliott went into a deep depression and killed himself.  Just before his death he donated the lot for a school--provided the board named it after his wife.

The original school is the portion on the southeast corner of Locust and Main Streets.  Some additions where made in 1939 and in 2002 a major renovation was completed. LSE--as it is called by local residents--originally served as Boonville's High School, but now is a Middle School.
