United Church of Christ

Name: German Evangelical Congregation,
Evangelical Church of Boonville, United Church of Christ
Location: 7th and Spring
Built: 1887-1888, 1915-1916
This church was built in the years of 1887-1888 and 1915-1916. The design is Gothic Revival. It sits on the southeast corner of Seventh and Spring Streets, facing north onto Spring. To the south is the church office and educational building. They are built on the site of an old uncharted cemetery.
The church's first building was in 1853. The evangelicals used this as their worship center until 1887. The current church was dedicated in June of 1887. In 1892 the church was named "The German Evangelical Congregation." That name didn't stay with the church; it soon became "Evangelical Church Of Boonville," then the "The United Church Of Christ." The church was renovated in 1908, 1941 and 1953. In 1915 the church was enlarged with Sunday School rooms. The pipe organ was donated by the Doris Gmelich family that owned a jewelry store on Main Street. The Educational Building was built in 1953.
The pointed arched opening has tracery, buttresses, and central spire. The roof is covered with pressed tin and has four louvered dormers. On the roof there are V-shaped modillions. The church's gothic arch is accented by a keystone painted white.
This church had an important historical role serving the German heritage of this community.
